PORCUPINE LOOP

Our colour for this route on the map is yellow, derived from the flower of the Granaatbos or Karoo Gold which is widespread in central to the eastern Karoo and currently widespread through the Karoo after the good rains.

The Porcupine is also widespread in the Karoo. They are slow-moving rodents with share quills on their back that they use as a defence. They are nocturnal.

The Porcupine Loop covers 235 km from Beaufort West to Three Sisters!

The Three Sisters are a land formation near Victoria West, Northern Cape, South Africa, comprising three distinctively shaped hills. The farm on which they are situated and the nearby railway siding are also named Three Sisters.

Beaufort West is a typical “platteland” town with a rich, romantic history. Heart-transplant pioneer Professor Chris Barnard, the town’s most famous son, is honoured in the museum.
