MEERKAT LOOP

Beaufort West, the oldest town in the Central Karoo, lies in an area that has been inhabited for centuries. Some of the world’s most interesting stone age sites have been discovered on its outskirts. Bushmen once lived here and fine examples of their rock engravings have been found nearby.

The Meerkat is part of the mongoose family and live in all parts of the Karoo and thermoregulates their body temperature. They live in burrows as part of multifamily groups and forage insects, lizards and eggs.

Our colour for this route on the map is red, derived from the Cancer Bush, a shrub with bitter, aromatic leaves and red-orange flowers appearing in spring to mid-summer. It is regarded as a multi-purpose medicinal plant.

The Meerkat Loop covers 155 km from Beaufort West via De Jagers Pass,  Molteno Pass and Three Sisters.
